Tutorly ("we", "us", or "our") connects students and parents with independent private tutors across Malaysia. This page sets out both our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal data, and our Terms of Use, which govern your use of our website and matching service.

By using our website or submitting an enquiry or application, you agree to this Privacy Policy and these Terms of Use.

Privacy Policy

We handle personal data in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) of Malaysia.

Information we collect

We collect the following personal data, depending on how you use our services:

  • Parent and guardian enquiries: your name, contact number, email, and preferred locations, together with details about the student, such as level or grade, syllabus, subjects, learning needs, preferred mode of learning, schedule, budget or rate, and any remarks you choose to share.
  • Tutor applications: your full name, NRIC, contact number, email, qualifications and achievements, years and type of teaching experience, the subjects, levels, and syllabuses you teach, preferred locations, teaching modes and lesson formats, teaching style, profile photo, and any supporting documents you upload.
  • Communications: messages and information you send us by email, WhatsApp, or our web forms.
  • Usage data: pages visited, approximate location, device and browser details, and similar information collected automatically through cookies and analytics.

Information about students and children

Our services involve tutoring for students, who may be minors. Information about a student is provided by a parent or guardian, who confirms they have the authority to share it on the student's behalf. We use student information only to understand learning needs and arrange suitable tutoring.

How we use your information

  • Match parents and students with suitable tutors.
  • Review, vet, and rank tutor applications.
  • Communicate with you about enquiries, applications, matches, trial classes, and support.
  • Operate, maintain, and improve our website and services.
  • Send service-related updates and, where you have consented, other relevant information.
  • Comply with legal obligations and protect against fraud or misuse.

How we share your information

We share personal data only where necessary to provide our services:

  • With tutors and parents: to arrange a match, we share relevant enquiry details with shortlisted tutors and relevant tutor profile details with parents.
  • With service providers: hosting, data storage, analytics, and messaging providers that process data on our behalf under confidentiality obligations.
  • For legal reasons: where required by law, regulation, or legal process, or to protect our rights and the safety of others.
  • We do not sell your personal data.

Cookies and analytics

We use cookies and privacy-conscious analytics to understand how visitors use our site and to improve it. You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings, although some features may not work as intended without them.

Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including matching, record-keeping, and meeting legal requirements. When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.

Data security

We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. Sensitive documents, such as tutor identity documents and profile photos, are stored with restricted access.

International transfers

Some of our service providers may process data outside Malaysia. Where this happens, we take steps to ensure your personal data remains protected to a standard consistent with this policy.

Your rights

Under the PDPA, you may request access to or correction of your personal data, withdraw your consent, or ask us to limit how we process it. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. Please note that withdrawing consent may affect our ability to provide our services, such as matching you with a tutor.

Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of the Tutorly website and matching service.

Our service

Tutorly provides a service that matches students and parents with independent private tutors. We help with introductions and matching only.

Before making an introduction, Tutorly reviews the tutor's application and speaks with the tutor about their teaching experience, subjects and levels taught, lesson approach, communication style, availability, and expectations.

Tutors are independent and are not employees, agents, or partners of Tutorly. Any tutoring arrangement, including lessons, scheduling, fees, and payment, is made directly between the tutor and the student or parent. Tutorly does not collect fees on behalf of either party and is not a party to that arrangement. Any payment disputes must be resolved directly between the parties.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and complete information in your enquiry or application.
  • Carry out your own checks and use your own judgement before agreeing to or beginning any tutoring arrangement.
  • Use an introductory call or other direct conversation to ask questions and decide whether the tutor is suitable before lessons begin. Tutorly may help arrange this introduction.
  • Agree lesson terms, fees, and payment arrangements directly with the other party.
  • You may request a different tutor before the first class without penalty. If you switch after the first class, the completed first class remains payable directly to the tutor, and any other payment matters must be discussed and resolved directly between the parties.
  • Conduct yourself respectfully and lawfully in all interactions.

Limitation of liability

Because Tutorly only provides a matching service, we are not a party to the relationship between tutors, students, and parents. To the extent permitted by law, Tutorly is not liable for any incidents, disputes, loss, injury, or damage arising between tutors, students, and parents, including in relation to the conduct, safety, quality, payment, or outcome of any lessons or arrangements.

While we review tutor applications, we do not guarantee the suitability, qualifications, or conduct of any tutor, and a match does not constitute an endorsement.

Governing law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Malaysia.

We may update this Privacy Policy and these Terms of Use from time to time. The latest version will always be available on this page, along with its effective date.
